Drilling Ahead

World Oilfield Forum

Hello Every body;
I'm working on a bit selection program for a 16" hole. The problem we are facing is the lithology as it consists of an alternation of soft and hard formation. Besides, there is a high tool vibration; therefore, we couldn't reach the TD of 16" section. Many cutters are damaged.
I don't know if any of this forum members has faced that problem before. I'm looking forward hearing from you any suggestions, solutions or documentation.

Many thanks
Boumezrag

You don't give enough info here to formulate and effective bit strategy, however it would appear that you should be using a tri-cone (could be inset or mill tooth, need more info to decide) on a motor. The motor will lessen vibration by discoupling the bit from the assembly, if the vibration is bit driven. However, vibration can also be formation / stabilisation driven and may need a review of the BHA configuration. As I said, not enough info to form an opinion. Who do you work for, if your an engineer with a oil company then they should have enough contacts in the business to sort this out. If you don’t then you should start talking to someone like Baker (bits, and drilling / evaluation departments) as they have extensive experience with this sort of this, as does Schlum and and Halliburton (though they will charge you an arm and a leg as well as requiring your first born as a down payment).
Insert bit(button bit)
Not suitable due to formation
Ever heard of a shock sub? And a slow rotary......????

There is a new "hybrid" bit out there that is still in the testing phase. It is kind of a cross between a PDC and a TriCone. I think it has five or so blades like a PDC and then three cones that are not touching. It's a pretty amazing bit. Seems to be what you might be looking for. I don't have much info on it now but I'll probably have more in a few days. I've seen it come out of the hole after 120 hours looking brand new. That's after hard formations and sometimes some rediculous torque.
That's really new for me. I'll look it up. I really appreciate that from you.
Thank you very much for your answer that is very nice of you. I'm in touch with Reedhycalog and Smish Bit departements trying to solve the problem.
