What should be the surface pressure? Given the following:

MW = 8.9 ppg

depth=8950 ft

8.5 inch hole using a PDC bit, with 6 x 18 nozzles, last casing 13- 3/8" at 8570'

Please explain how to get the pressure losses in relation to the first question?

Your pressure losses will vary with the flow rate and mud viscosity. There is not enough data to calculate the total pressure loss now.

When you would have all required data, you may find all formulas in many Drilling Handbooks. But the easiest for understanding, from my point of view, is Norton Lapeyruse's "Formulas and Calculations for Drilling, Production, and Workover". You can find it through the links on the Drilling Ahead browser toolbar.

Not enough information, but I can tell you that pressure at the flowline (which is surface) is zero...

There are many parameters that enters into account when calculating pressure losses such as drill string geometry, mud rehology and flow type. You 'll find more details on "Drilling data handbook" section G.

as they said, we need enough data to caculate the pressure losses. for example, we need the  type  of fluid used ( model of fluid)  its propriety, the  tubulars size used,.....
our fluid is KCL water base mud with viscosity of 55,  842 ft of BHA  with 11  jts of 5  in HWDP, 15 jts of 6.5 in DC, 1 NBS and 2 string stab send to 8950 ft with a 5 in(19.5 ppf grade G105) DP. Float valve is installed in the string. spm of 60 and 65 each of the two triplex pumps, rpm of 50 and a torque bet 5 to 15 k ft lbs and a bit weight of 20 kips.

acording to this type of fluid we can use power law model to calculate the pressure. first of all you have to know the type of  flow (tubulent or laminar) that you have in each section by calculating  RENOLDS NUMBER.

- inside the DP, HWDP and DC. 

if you have laminar flow or turbulent flow, you can use the appropriate formulas. you look in Drilling data hand book page G18

-in the annulus between your drilling string and the casing or the open hole you'll do the same operation by conidering your annulus size. the appropriate formuas you'll find it in th same page than the previous one .

i appreciate your immediate response to my inquiry. Engineering solution is good and I still want to know the answer in that sense, but I also need to know, a sort of rule of thumb, for a driller consumption- a non -engineering lay people so he could immediately response to the situation in the most possible time without looking into tables and charts. Is there anyone here who got the experience on the the average losses on the surface lines as well , mud pumps and the pulsation dampener. thanks a lot.

you must not rely to any rule of thumb if there is any. Every well is different, different BHA`s different mud systems, what about your drill string, liners in mudpump etc.

you better start your calculations.

for calculate surface pressure , you have to send string size (DPs , HWDPs & DCs & Motor )

Not enough info, you need pressure drop (loss) of surface lines (standpipe kellyhose), drill pipe, HWDP and Collars as well as any other dynamic influences as in MWD, motor, Underreamer jetting etc etc. Less important, but required for calculations while drilling is annular cuttings load etc.

 

You cant work out SPP just by bit nozzles, mud weight and a TV depth
