Drilling Ahead

World Oilfield Forum

Dropped my derrick last hitch. Layin' it down for a rig move, had it about a foot and a half off the derrick stand and the bull line broke. Had 10 pulls on it, with 16 the limit... or so we thought. Come to find out we had a "refurbished" bull line with no telling how many pulls on it.

When i first broke out we didn't slip drill line often (shinned like it was chrome), much less record pulls on the bull line. Seems rather ironic to me that we are working in such a "smothered with safety" culture that a grown man cannot even carry a knife anymore and yet they let me take the rig out of the yard with a used bull line and yet no one bothered to tell me.

Prayed that day more than most about God helping me to be a better driller, father, etc... God answers prayer. Once again i am alive due to the grace of God.

The bull line broke on the drillers side between the a-leg sheave and the blocks. You ever had a bull line break on you? You instinctively slam the brake and the joystick down, yet there is nothing you can do about anything, and everything is falling. The section of bull line that came down by me knocked my snuff out from under my hand on the joystick console but didn't touch me.

Started counting hard hats and one man was unaccounted for, immediately got a knot in my gut that hurt bad. Come to find out the pusher had sent him to the location beside ours for a manlift. Everyone was alright, derrick was tweaked. God is good!

Got a bigger, new bull line, new sheaves, new derrick girts, etc and the derrick came up yesterday.

Work hard, pray hard, and even if you think you got a new bull line check it out.

Holy smokes! Glad no one got hurt!
Yes, it was @ 3", but it parted between the sheave over my head on the drillers side a-leg and the blocks. Every one i ever worked for just did the visual inspection thing as well, but Patterson is hyperactive on safety and the 16 pulls is a good part of that. Just wished that they had told me the line was refurbished on the front side.
Should be 10 pulls or 3 years witch ever come first
For a new bull line perhaps that would work, but evidently not a re-furbished one.
I have seen some of the chinese bull lines come to the rigs as "new" but really it is newly refurbished!
Amen Brother, glad all is well!
GOD is good, glad you're ok !
Got any pics Lynn?
Yes you and your men are truely Blessed by the Lord. Keep on praying.
Amen, just moved the rig, (still moving it.) Noticed a girt that did not look right and come to find out it was not made out of the right material. That upsets me. Substituted a smaller gauge metal. Hope we get it fixed before it goes up again. Glad we didn't have to pull too much on the last well.

That kind of thing really makes me smile!  God working in the oilfield!  : )  I say a lot of prayers for the crews I meet with - rigs, pipeline crews, truck drivers...... enjoyed the testimony.  : )

Should have written allright.  I got fired because i made the comments on the Drill Ahead.  Then after I was never told that I had an refurbished bull line.  i went counting like it was a new, after the wire rope people told it was the too small and the sheaves.  Then we got a different top section, but still had a too small girt.  The Patterson's chumps fired me after i started on '04.  When the team I was on called the A-team because after 46 of 48 rigs in this district hit the grass and only 2 were still drilling.  i was writing stops but they never changed the under gauge girts in the derrick.  I had a stroke because all the stress and the crap from Patterson.
