Drilling Ahead

A Social Network of Oil & Gas Professionals

Since there is alot of guys on here with time invested in the patch. Just out of curiosity what is the best company that you have worked for? Ive hear the same stories for rig to rig and company to company.
Is it always going to be about who you know and cut throat business. Good hands getting tossed to the side so a lazy friend can be on that takes his job for granted..
When i came to work i put 100% in every day. I wasnt there to make friends and gossip or kiss the bosses ass, but grated i did make a few very good friends that i still keep in touch with. I thought for sure my work ethics, and inteligents would trump the buddy system, but it did not.. Maybe i was just working around arrogent, small minded people at the time.
Now ive had many guys say " hey, dont take the patch personal" thats the way it is... I dont under stand how i couldnt take it personal because its my family future your playing with, and its some thing i love and planned to retire from one day..
Maybe this is a company thing or maybe not, but if you would like to this and discuss it i would love to hear what you have to say...

Have worked for Nabors North Texas District, and Nabors International (Pool Arabia). Nabors by far operates the better Iron. Well maintained and well trained employees. As far as the pay and overtime cuts go, thats not anything new. Stick around and you will see it again somewhere down the line. The Oilfield IS NOT a steady job in the states, there will always be ups and downs throughout your career. Chicken today, Feathers tomorrow. Just gotta learn to take advantage of the good times so you and your family will make it through the bad times. Had to learn the hard way myself when i was younger, don't over extend yourself during the good times.

I am an asst driller for transocean offshore they have been good for me for the past 6 years. Deepwater is the way to go. There are not as many lay-offs.

H&P hands down. Any division but South Texas.

I agree with H&P but, why not South Texas?? I'm with Tyler district and couldnt ask for a better company to work for.

I am for H&P working out of tyler but started in south tx division. They take way better care of the rig in tyler than south tx, The drilling supers in tyler do not have a big office to work out of so they are out in the field more at the rigs the see what is happening first hand and get to know the hands. In south tx the sups get most of thier info from the phone and Email and don't know the hands.

I totally agree! You would think in the year 2009 we would not have the good old boy (buddy) system still going strong in the oilfield, but it is. If you can make friends with a toolpusher you will always have a job. I've seen companies up here in northern oklahoma that have nothing but crack heads working for them or pot heads, and they have jobs cause of who they know, not because they are good workers or knowlegable in what they are doing.

I have worked in the oilfield for 19 years. I have worked all over Texas, mainly South and West Texas. I worked 7 years offshore. Most of my time was for a service company. As a service hand you meet people from many companies. That includes drilling contractors, service companies and the customers. Everyone has the best company and everyone has the worst company to work for. My advice is get hired, learn your business and make your company the best. You will have your complaints, and you will have your pride. Strive to have people to want to work with you and then to have people that want you to work for them, and then to want to work for you. Politics, not the govern politics, are one of the worst thing in the oilfield, but it is there and it is strong. People hire their family and friends, not always the best choices, you will witness it and it will affect you, positive or negitive. Loyalty has become a thing of the past for the most part. Hard work is for the day you do it not so much for the days to come, I am saying advancement is not always based off of knowledge, experience and work ethics. You see, there is where the politics are involved. Tend to business, not to rumor, gossip, friendship, kinship, opinion, or emotions. You will please people and you will have other unsatisfied. Job relations within the company your work for and also in the industry itself. Meet people, remember people and help people remember you, positively.
Find a company, go to work and become a hand. Don't forget where you came from, or what you have been. Be secure with your decisions, be assertive, be disciplined, be on time, be kind (friendly, not friends). Keep career friends, not good 'ole boy drinking buddy, come over for bar-b-gue friends. Some people are the advice I am giving, naturally. Most have to practice it.
Work hard, gain knowledge and experience for "You"! When you look good in eyes of the people you work for, your company you are employeed by will look good also.
Good Luck with your choices. God Bless.
