Since 1995 I must have analysed 100s of accident reports and something that comes through clearly is that most peole who get hurt, knew they were doing the wrong thing. When I ask them WHY they did what they KNEW they shouldn't do - the main reason was FEAR. people don't want to upset the boss or their workmates. They didn't want to look stupid or lazy or incompetent.
So, in much of our work to help people wok more safely, I a) try to show them that 80% of our fears are not real - we only think someone will be upset! For the other 20% we teach people to be more courageous and assertive in dealing with supervisors and workmates who may want to go ahead even if its unsafe.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has experienced the fear factor in a safety setting.
