Drilling Ahead

A Social Network of Oil & Gas Professionals

Since 1995 I must have analysed 100s of accident reports and something that comes through clearly is that most peole who get hurt, knew they were doing the wrong thing. When I ask them WHY they did what they KNEW they shouldn't do - the main reason was FEAR. people don't want to upset the boss or their workmates. They didn't want to look stupid or lazy or incompetent.
So, in much of our work to help people wok more safely, I a) try to show them that 80% of our fears are not real - we only think someone will be upset! For the other 20% we teach people to be more courageous and assertive in dealing with supervisors and workmates who may want to go ahead even if its unsafe.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has experienced the fear factor in a safety setting.

Bill ,
This has been my experience as well. Usually as I dig into my investigations another factor seems to come out Almost without exception, the men I talk to seem to be suprised by the fact that THEY were injured. It is human nature to think "it won't happen to me" and work in dangerous conditions thinking "nothing ever never happened before" My company really pushes the stop program and all of our employees go through training to teach them how to approach others and discuss concerns they might have with an unsafe act another person is doing or pointing out potentially hazardous conditions to anyone ,no matter their rank or position in the company. They are trained to approach third party employees on our locations also. Keep up the good work I appreciate this type of information.

Your welcome!
More and more over the years I'm realising that it's the psychological factors we have to take into account to help people improve even more. For example, it's not what you say but how you say it - tone, facial expression.
I've got lots of stuff on tis and can send if you want. Best way to get it is to sign up for the free safety briefings at www.safetybriefing.com
