Drilling Ahead

A Social Network of Oil & Gas Professionals

The last week has been interesting as heck to say the least. I about lost my brother, then gladly paid a thousand bucks for the prescriptions to keep him alive for the next month. Then realized no matter how broke he or I am, that we are all that each other have in this world. I can truly say I am my brothers keeper.

Now he and I were sitting here talking and he tells me, look at what this heart attack is going to do to my credit, no insurance and now I am off and cant even afford to pay for this medicine that you just put on your credit card little brother.....

So I say who cares about your credit or mine? He says you know I will be denied opportunities with employers if I can't pay these bills.....

Then it hits me, he is right, when I was with the majors, everybody runs a credit check on you these days. I denied people positions based off of criteria some hr rep in houston set, everyday.

Then it hits me hard, I went through a divorce 2 years ago, which didn't boost my credit any. Then when I got hurt with my eye last summer and fell behind on my bills and child support because i was off work hurt.
There has been 2 positions I was contacted about in the last 3 months, that once I signed the release for the credit check and background check, I was doomed by the credit check!

We need to press our representatives and congressman to change these laws that allow an employer to even inquire on your credit.

Especially with the economy and the plight of our industry!

It makes me sick to know that we have come to this when a lot of things are so out of our own control!

Amen brother!

Used to be that the quality of hand was measured by their ability to perform the labor requested. That reputation, good, bad or otherwise was what determined whether a hand got the job, not all this other HR B#(*^(^.

We've become a society run by lawyers, HR people and insurance policies. Common sense and the good judgment that a team lead / driller / supervisor just doesn't count anymore.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties T L. Prayers are with you....

Your correct prying into someones credit should only be done by banks. Or maybe the employers were doing what banks weren't either way it all stinks.

You are so very right. What ever happened to a person being judged by his work and not by his credit?
Hope things get better for you and your brother.

America is always perceived as great place to live, but is appears very hard place to live and survive. when fallen sick or no work, it is very hard to get back on your feet, and only places i know that do credit checks are the banks employees and places like this, so I am surprised so therefore i recommend major changes in the law. I hope you brother is ok and you both survive, remember there are friends out in the world that care.

Amen to that brother!! We have all had things take place in our lives that in 30 days can effect us for the rest of our lives. Not to many years ago I had a heart problem that left me with thousands in debt that I couldnt pay. And still to this day my credit has sufferd. I go to work every day 40, 50, 60 hours a week like most of us do in this industry, Im not out to get to anyone, yet I still suffer for things out of my control. Im not saying that we dont have to face what comes along in life but my credit reports have nothing to do with my job performance. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

I Agree Just Yesterday I Went To My PO Box To Find A Letter From My Business Card Company That I & My Employees Get Fuel Ect Stating That Effective In 5 Days My Company Can No Longer Use Cards . The Trust Co That Funds Them Is Not Going To Fund Them Anymore . I Pay My Bills Each Month In Full But Still Have A Hard Time Getting Credit Because I Own My Equipment And Am Not In Debt For Any . Now What Card To Choose Because The Gov May Own Or Bail Out The F in Bank And It All Happens Again ! But The Only People That Have Rights In This Country Of Ours Anymore Are The People That Just Got Off The Boat Here ! ! !

i couldnt agree more, our credit rating has got nothing to do with our ability to perform certain jobs,if you are qualified for the position, then what does the credit score matter...

TL, Hey I wondered why you hadnt answered me but now I know. I hope your brother is doing well. It seems as a lot of adversity has been in your life in the past few years. It has only made you stronger my friend. And a better person although the plight of our industry isnt a big deal with everyone. When Exxon makes 50 billion in proffit in good years and our politicians keep using the same old lie about "Big Oil" screwing them and blaming high fuel prices on oil companies instead of poor energy legislation and allowing the speculators to run the price up so that crooked polititians and big investors can manipulate the stock market and then hide their money offshore and play by different rules then nothing will be accomplished. They allowed the realestate market to tank even though they were warned and they changed the law in 1999 so that the speculators could do their thing. There used to be a private company that kept natural gas figures but as soon as they passed that law that company was replaced by the EIA. A government company. I fear that if there is change its going to be for the worse. We have the most corrupt bunch of SOB's in Washington right now its not even funny. They do what they want when they want. And look at some of their credit histories. But does that hurt them? No because they get that pay for the rest of their lives. And a pay raise every year. Its a racket. While you and I put in 12 to 24 hour days they look for ways to tax it out of us. Do you think I am going to spend the night in my truck to support what Obama 's Cap and Tax plan and his health care plan. Nope I will retire. Good to know you are still kicking. Skinny Taylor

I also object to the auto and home owners insurance companies being able to use that as criteria for charging you higher rates. After all if you don't pay an insurance premium you just don't have coverage. Just an excuse for greed I think.
