Back in the days of wooden bullwheels and drums there was an expression of 'pegging line on the spool' which had to do with getting the big hemp drilling line on the spool....I think.    Does anyone know what this meant and how it was actually done?

I "think", you drove a stake, about 12" from the end of the line, through the braid of the line.   The tail, being what keeps the line from pulling loose, plus, the tail will allow you to get the line to break correctly on the drum.  I could be wrong, but that's how an old driller I new would put line on a wooden spool, rather than using the u-shaped staple that came with the spool.
