Hey folks,

I want to compare methods that folks use to scribe an adustable motor when they have it hanging in the derrick.   You set the bend and then need to track the scribe line up the motor so as to know where to set and orient the MWD mule shoe.

How do "you" track the scribe line up the length of the motor and any pony NMDC that you have hanging in the derrick?

Personally it has worked well for me to us a curvomark and highside everything as it is laying flat on the ground that way you can measure the exact MSL to on every piece all the way up to set your Muleshoe. This meathod only applies @ initial pickup so if I have to trip I usually just use the old earplug meathod.
Hi Jeff,

Yeah, doing the same things myself when I've got a fixed bend motor on the racks (wondered what the heck that tool was called, thanks!) and using the earplug method when I've the motor hanging in the elevators. I was wondering if anyone has come up with any other method for a hanging motor?

I'm thinking that you could use a laser pointer of some sort, hanging off the upper end. Maybe using a Pi tape to measure from a common scribe line. Toying with a couple ideas, thought I'd throw out the question to see what others have come up with. I mean we work with these high dollar motors and expensive MWD/LWD tools every day, and yet we rely on a 2 cent earplug and eyeballing it to line everything up. In this day of high tech toys everywhere, I can't help but think we could come up with something else.
I use a laser point taped to my hang off collar, but our MWD has a set scribe made onto the out side of the hangoff collar. Then we pick up to the adjustment of the motor and see where the laser is then get our toolface offset measurements then. I havent worked with a muleshoe in so long I didn't think anyone ran them anymore.
Hi Joe,

I was wondering if a guy couldn't do something like that with a laser pointer rig of some sort. I was checking out the local ACE hardware and found stuff that I could set up for this and it would cost less that $50 for the whole shooting match, so I think I'll give it a try.

Yeah, we're still using the muleshoe sleeve assemble (which is what I'm referring to specifically) as shown at

http://mwd-tools.com/mwd-components/components/ (Items 30-6040 thru 30-6060)

When I get a chance to try out my home made point assembly, I'll reply back here and let folks know how it works out.
Matt, you removed your response before I could respond, "not flying the space shuttle" but I have a buddy who kinda helps me along in this field who said something similar. His comment goes something like this:

"We measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk or a paint stick and cut with an axe."

Have to laugh, both comments reveal a great degree of truth! ;-)
MS Energy does in Pa. Joe
I have been doing a lot of work for Anadarko and they are running the EM tool that halliburton Has.
That's me Dee, though I haven't worked with OFAE since midsummer. Whacha up to Dee?

Dee,

Contact me via private message when you get a chance, want to visit with you a bit.
Cracks me up getting new hands and they have lasers, tape etc, a laser only has to be a tad off vertical and your scribe could be 30deg out at the motor scribe line, especially if you have a bunch of non mag in between (a simple small flashlight would be better). Then when they get in the hole that can hardly keep the tool face in the right quadrant, let alone 10deg either side of what they want, usually laugh my a** off and they get all bent out of shape.

My eyes are not what they used to be so an ear plug just does not cut it anymore, I get a styrofoam or plastic cup and cut a V in it, slap a bit of dope on it and stick it to the pipe, wind a bit of tape around it if the wind is howling. Works every time and even the new guys start using it as they are doing nights, its a lot easier to see.

Even then I’m rough, only time I get all precise is doing cluster work on crowded platforms.
I, too, am feeling the strain of the years on my eyes. When I just have to set the scribe line to the UBHO, I just get a white cigarette b*** and put it on the UBHO - if you are running a gyro the UBHO is usually much further up and the cone shaped paper cups - like the one's they put on the side of the water cooler in the doghouse - can be used since the white color sticks out.
