Just some food for thought!

I have been sitting here reading emails and posts. I am extremely pleased to be a member and to have been included in this forum. I am really pleased to see that we have more international involvement showing up daily on here.

This is not the first bust I've been through. I wish it would be the last, but at the same time the harsh reality is that this boom bust cycle is a fact of life! The current bust is just one or the latest of many.

Times like this bring rise to fond memories of better days. I remember going to work on workover rigs for my brother and grandfather anytime there was not school from the age of 13. Eventually playing hooky and quitting school all together at 16 to go make the huge money on a rotary for 8.50 an hour to throw chain.

I remember in the beginning working for family, there was a whole lot of expectations placed on me that weren't the ordinary new employee. Back then I resented the fact that I had to work twice as hard as our regular employees and all.

I remember though waking up one day when I was 20 years old and realizing I was pushing 3 rotary rigs and 10 workover rigs. That was when it hit me. I was a boy in a mans world, all of my equals or mentors were 20 years or more my senior I was lucky.

Now I feel very privelaged to have went through the baptisms by fire and earned the respect of my peers the hard way. I am sad that this is lost with the passing of the torch to our future replacements.

Because I feel that the tough unforgiving nature of those who broke us out, not only shaped us as HANDS but also as people.

Granted things as far as safety needed to change, but also nowadays we have companies using the word safety to justify lack of performance as a contractor too. I won't mention any names. I remmeber, there were no sick days, christmas was just another day. The old timers used to say in the oilfield, we are better than the postal service, rain, sleet, snow or shine we are getting it done.

My whole point is that now we have an opportunity to blend the old school with the new. Passing the torch is inevitable.

But in these tough times, this bust is different than any other not only in my life or career. But unlike any that anyone has ever been through. The reason why, technology.

Today as I ramble my toughts here, there are people from every continent in the world that can see my amusing words. With this brings opportunities like none of us have ever fully realized or appreciated.

We can market ourselves and our thoughts to an limit unlimited audience. Secondly we can all pull together and try and support each other and network ideas and opportunities.

So in these tough times I will throw two old sayings out here.

1.) It;s ok to be wrong, you don't always have to be right,BUT we must always be CORRECT!

2.) Lets get it done and talk about it later, this applies now because it's not a time for bragging rights, but more about realistic approaches and ideas to create solutions not only to our personal situation, but the situation of everyone as a whole!

Be safe and think positive, have a great day!

I think that there is no tool out there that can completely do our jobs for us. There is nothing like a good driller and his hands to drill a hole. No computer or machine will ever be able to"feel" it like we can. There will always be innovative tools to assist us but we should never completely rely on these things. I'm young myself but I broke out on a rig with no computers, no pipe spinners, no kelley spinners, earth pits...and really, it was all "junk iron". Things were always falling apart. Old, wore out pumps. If, by some miracle, we had any free time, it was spent by scrubbing, digging or cleaning ditches, painting, even raking the location. I'm glad that I was broke out that way. I have always worked for good drillers. I am very fortunate in that aspect. I see drillers with six months experience, especially in the Dallas area. I've heard alot of stories about how they get someone to come out with a ditch witch to dig all of the ditches. They hire roustabouts to scrub and paint. They're just making hands lazy. I'm glad I broke out in West Texas with old school roughnecks. Nice post....I think that it's important to the history and future of our way of life. To alot of us, it's not just a job. It's our lifestyle. It's what we do, what we are, and what we talk about. It's what some of our dads and grandads were. It's what some of our kids will be.

Yeah over in America i hearing you guys getting pretty screwed over with ya work, we doing it very lucky in Australia I aint had a day off in months and we are so far behind in wells we just cant keep up anymore you know and most of the time there aint a full crew to do the job, we need roughnecks boys! and drillers, pushers, company men etc, mind you, things get done different here, we more "laid back" in a typical aussie fashion, theres a few aussie riggin companies you could try, Lucas Mitchell (mostly little singles), Ensign Australia, MB Century Drilling, Eastern Wells Group and Des Caling Drilling (Small co, small rigs but good money), and if your into your workovers, you got TDC workover and Wild Desert Workover, and all your normal service crews, halliburton, slumber j, weatherford, whatever. Give it a try mates, just lendin a hand some blokes who need it! so if anyone wants some more info,
just e-mail me at keepin_it_aussie_@hotmail.com
