I will open this discussion with the pretence that you have read my blog about a man being killed , it's on my home page...http://www.drillingahead.com/profiles/blogs/a-very-sad-but-true-story
The story formally written took place in the seventy's.......now jumping into the 21st century, with all the JSA'S written, STOP cards, STJ and the focus on safety as being No. 1, we have seen the "Beast" take another man down. This time it was running 13 3/8" casing. I have personally worked with this group of peopleon that rig. I don't know the exact details, but none the less a man was killed, his family will be missing papa this Christmas.
The difference from the accident in the seventy's and the one today, is that we will investigate and find out "What went wrong".......it won't be swept under the carpet...it will be sad , but we'll take from what happened today to a higher level and learn from it.
I'm very happy and proud to be a part of this "New Oilfield"......our and my objective is to produce oil without the expence having injuries to my men..........when I get more details, I'll post them
It makes me sad to hear this news Karl, especially at this time of the year when people typically have better spirits with the thought of the holiday season approaching. Do keep us updated ok?
If you can find out about the family, maybe a few of us can put something together to assist in this time of sorrow.
I hear you there. I seen too many hands get maimed or killed back in the 60's & 70's on rigs . Myself included. Seems there wasn't much care for hands in those days. They were treated like cattle in the feedlot. Hopefully hands now days don't have to put up with much like we did then.

you know guys thats so true in every since i remember when you got hurt you shook it off and kept on rough necking or picked up the slack till that hand was able to join the rodeo again! but to a family in this situation even with jobs being as slow as they are i believe that we could help out this family and hopefully those kids will have some kind of joy for the hollidays, its surely not the same as having daddy im sure being a father of 5 and the wife too wwe all would hope that our fello rough necks would do the same for us,,,,, let me know if we get anything going for them i would like to do my part as would my family who are all rough necks! and god bless you karl for having the hart to start something like this
Hey Tony and Dale,
Thanks for your support and wanting to contribute to the family. This accident/fatality happened in Ecuador. It is very difficult to send mail, let alone a check to the family. I'm going into the Bogota office in the morning, so I'll have more info regarding this fatality, for sure I'll post the findings to be shared as a lesson learnt for everyone to share with their crews, to avoid this from happening again. With the 16 years I spent working with H&P, I know they will not let this go unnoticed and bring a big stand down in safety to all of their rigs in the fleet...worldwide. I would also expect that H&P compensates his family for this tragedy...we can't bring him back to his family and dollars will only ease the pain of being fatherless
Rodney,
I have tried to get more information to this tragedy, its still in the investigation stage...they owe and will give a report, probably next week.....this isnt a hush, hush incident, it will be broadcasted and whatever happened will be a lesson learnt..........at the expence of one man not being home for Christmas with his family! I have contacted the operator, and will post as soon as I get the data on this accident.
RZA...I can only give the group a few details......From " What I've heard" this incident took place in Ecuador......From "What I've heard" , and the investigation is ongoing, they were running casing, the single joint elevators used to P/U pipe from the V door was damaged, so they opted to use slings from the bales to the eyes of the single joint elevators W/O the swivel....all went well and after landing it and cementing it they used the air tugger to back out and lay down the landing joint, tied on to the single joint elevators. As you know the derrick was full of DP, they backed out the joint and lifted it with the tugger, tried to push it out the V door and didnt quite make it, this put slack into the tugger/single joint elevators and when they picked up on it to try again...the landing joint violently swung and hit the floorman into the ribs, against the stands of DP in the derrick......this is what "I Believe" happened. When I get the "Offical Report" I'll pass it along for us all to understand and learn from.
I KNOW OF A HAND ( SAM) THAT DIED IN THE 80'S THIS SAME WAY. PIPE HIT HIM IN THE CHEST. HE THOUGHT HE WAS OK. HE DIED TWO WEEKS LATER. ( HIS HEART WAS KNOCKED LOOSE FROM THE CAVITY THAT HOLDS IT IN PLACE. AND HE DIED IN HIS SLEEP AT HOME.) YOUNGESTERS PLEASE REPORT ALL ACCIEDENTS TO YOUR DRILLER AND TOOLPUSHER NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK. LET THEM DECIDE HOW BAD IT IS. WE NEED ALL OF YOU
