World Oilfield Forum
Hi all! My name is Shawna and I'm from the Houston area (Katy, actually). Just found this group online and am excited to get to know some other wives going through the same struggles. I live here wth my 2 daughters while my husband works in the San Antonio area. We have a military background so as sad as it is to say, I was already used to him being gone when he decided to work in the oilfield. I know that the Houston area is big for oilfield families and was hoping to possibly find some wives in the area that get this lifestyle and don't constantly ask me "How do you do it?". Looking forward to getting to know you ladies!!

I'm just around the corner from Katy in the Alief area. I guess closer to Sugarland because that's where I work. We have only been in the Houston area for about 4 years now. My husband is a production operator in the Gulf and leaves out of Houma, LA. It was rough for a while getting used to it but as you mentioned people always asking how you deal with it. That was a biggy for me. Like I don't know he's gone and we don't see the stuff he misses. Ugh, I got so tired of people bringing it up because it made me feel bad for a while. Then I realized that it didn't bother me because all these people kept asking how I could stand it and how we could live like this. We have the best marriage and one of the strongest of most people we know. We could live like this and trust so that made me feel better. Maybe this is not a lifestyle for all but it is a lifestyle and we love ours. We have two boys and my husband just switched to a 14 & 14. Love it. We will finally have family time again. My husband had a job before back home that kept him away a lot. He was in construction and often traveled. How I don't miss those days. He was home every night but up and gone before daylight and sometimes not back til midnight. When our boys were real young and we had a sitter I would go to a site with him and help just so he could get home and get some rest. It was frustrating at times but his company did take care of him. They paid for our Anniversary trip to Las Vegas one year so I guess that was something nice. Look at me just rambling. Lol..... Well, welcome.

So, you are working? We have decided that with him being gone so much, it is better for me to be a full time stay at home parent. Sometimes I miss the working world, but then I have so much going on with the kids that it's nice to have the time to get that stuff done without being overwhelmed or stretched too thin.
He's only been in this line of work since last year, but like I said, I was already used to him being gone due to the military so it's not too big of a change. The biggest change I've had to face is not being surrounded by wives going through the same thing. I was really excited to find this group.
It's great to meet you, Angelic, and we should try to get together one day being that we're neighbors and all, LOL.
Permalink Reply by Angelic Calderon on October 15, 2012 at 8:11am Good morning,
We like it here. Well, I like my house. Lol. Not much of a big city person.
I do work part time at Macys in Sugarland. My husband wants me to stay home to and I did for most of our 14 years together but when my youngest of the two boys started school I was so lost and sad. I had been so busy with my little family that I forgot to be social outside of it. My husband told me that I needed to do something to keep me busy while he was gone and the kids were at school. I started working at Macys last year about this time. I was so busy between work, the kids and school programs. The job did not help much, it did for a while but I missed the extra time with my boys and when my husband was home I didnt get to see him much. I have been debating on quiting for a couple months now. My husband and boys would sure like it but we are realizing that staying in Houston is not going to work long term. So we have started remodeling our home and plan to rent it in the next 2-3yrs and move into LA. It will be better for my husband as right now he has to commute so long. It will be a little better now that he just started a 14 & 14. He was doing a 7 & 7 for the longest time. How long does your hubby go out for?
