This was when it really was Old School. This happened in the early 70's when my driller hired out to Big Chief. The evening tour driller had quit so this opened up this tour. We were to relieve daylights at 4 pm and we were running late because we couldn't find the road into the rig. We could see the rig but were having trouble finding the road into it. We drove in the order we had our name on the book and I can't remember why Slick, the motorman drove but he did. Slick was driving a 49 Ford that was not in very good shape and he proclaimed he had a brand new boot in every tire when he was asked by Jack, our driller, what kind of shape his tiers were in. Oh well. Well we found the rig just outside of Ardmore OK and pulled into the location about 4:30. Thirty minutes late. When we went through the cattle guard we could see Sandy, the Toolpusher running down the front stairs to meet us. Slick drove that old Ford up to the bottom of the stairs slamed on the brakes, jumped out and said, "Wait a minute, wait a minute. You see that car, pointing at the 49 Ford. This car was bran new when we left town." Sandy started laughing and we changed clothes and went to work. I'm still surprised we didn't get run off before we worked our first day. By the way I can spell good but my keyboard has not learned yet.
