Drilling Ahead

World Oilfield Forum

This was when it really was Old School. This happened in the early 70's when my driller hired out to Big Chief. The evening tour driller had quit so this opened up this tour. We were to relieve daylights at 4 pm and we were running late because we couldn't find the road into the rig. We could see the rig but were having trouble finding the road into it. We drove in the order we had our name on the book and I can't remember why Slick, the motorman drove but he did. Slick was driving a 49 Ford that was not in very good shape and he proclaimed he had a brand new boot in every tire when he was asked by Jack, our driller, what kind of shape his tiers were in. Oh well. Well we found the rig just outside of Ardmore OK and pulled into the location about 4:30. Thirty minutes late. When we went through the cattle guard we could see Sandy, the Toolpusher running down the front stairs to meet us. Slick drove that old Ford up to the bottom of the stairs slamed on the brakes, jumped out and said, "Wait a minute, wait a minute. You see that car, pointing at the 49 Ford. This car was bran new when we left town." Sandy started laughing and we changed clothes and went to work. I'm still surprised we didn't get run off before we worked our first day. By the way I can spell good but my keyboard has not learned yet.

Like that.... wife did too! Good thinking...Yes on the KEYBOARD mind has that same problem too....
Slick sounds like one cat w/an answer 4 everything.I bet he was agood hand!
The driller owed that hand a 6 pack for such a good response. It's not often that you can make a pusher laugh when you're late for your first tour. Good story!
We had a hand show up late for our hitch (we were on a camp job) and the pusher chased him off location with a 5 lb sledge hammer. The hand's excuse was that someone knocked down all the rig signs on the long a** lease road. To say the least, that didn't go over very well. Good riddens though. That guy wasn't much of a hand anyways.
now that is funny..
I hate to even think about "Back in the old days", my body hurts everyday because of them old days.
The industry has come a long way, "but" still has a way to go.
Man, this is one fine post!!! Got some stories I'd like to swap with you....

Deeper
Told by an old daylight driller in south Texas back in the 80's......happened in the late 50's......

The day crew had been relieved by evening tour and was nearly back to the highway (seven or so miles) when they saw the evening tour "summer help" worm walking up the road toward the rig!

They picked him up and carried him back to the rig. He wasn't talking about how he ended up walking to work in the middle of the King Ranch in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of summer.

The daylight driller just had to go up on the floor while the worm was changing clothes and ask the evening tour driller how he "lost" his hand at the highway gate.

Evening tour driller just said, "If he's gonna work at the same speed he opens a gate, he needs more practice on opening gates..........he was in "speed school" when you picked him up."
Great Story! I worked on rigs back when I was in my young 20's and I am in my late 50's now so I guess I could call myself one of the "old school". I roughnecked in Texas mostly and some in Oklahoma. I now work for the railroad and am getting close to retirement. With all the news coverage these days about the mess in the Gulf, I hear people talking about it at work and sometimes I tell them about some of my crazy experiences I had out there and some of the people I worked for and with. They always freak out! Those years I spent roughnecking are special to me now and I will cherish them for the rest of my life.
