Drilling Ahead

World Oilfield Forum

I checked out an old Wichita Tech rig last week and noted that the drilling line spool is separated into two sections.....a large one and a small one.   What is the purpose of this?

The smaller side would be the working side, they would drill 5 foot at a run. This would be where they would spool enough drill line to a run. The large space is called the reserve. On a cabletool machine you don't want to drill with cable spooled on top of itself,so to speak.

Thank you Benny so very much for taking the time to educate me.    It makes perfect sense now but I would never have figured that out on my own.    I'm going to build a fully functional 1/8 scale model of the rig and see how deep it will drill under my shop floor.     I just finished a 1/8 scale steam engine they used way back then to run these rigs with and I'll post a couple of pics of it for your review.    Thanks again and I am very sure I'll have more questions as I get into the building and I hope I can call on you for help from time to time.
