I remember the Rocker B when it was called the Bar S
Old roads and bad bridges.

Well this one is one of those dumb moves you make with out thinking the out come.

Was heading down south of Gillette in between Reno Junction and Midwest on one of those old roads that was in good shape but those little bridges were not.

Now some of these bridges have been modified for heavier trucks and some were not…. You know those old bridges that the ranchers make out of whatever they can fine…. I was told to be down there at a certain time and was running just a little late. There were to ways to get to this location the fast and direct way or the round about way.
Well I am running late so the direct way was good for me.

Now as I was traveling down this old road went across a few of these old bridges and the weight signs said what I had on was to much but hey go fast over the bridge… hey it worked… you could feel them sag little but they would come back up…. Well the further down the road the heavier I got… now it was making me a little bit jumpy.
Now came around a corner and there was a wide spot in the road and there was Halliburton with its pump trucks pulled off the road. They were all standing around the pickup watch me come down the road and some were looking at this bridge. Now this bridge was very narrow and had old trees for supports. It was not much different from what we all drove over but it had Halliburton spooked… note I didn’t know that until afterwards.
So thought why are they all pulled over there? Well its Halliburton they were taking a break…. Start looking a little closer at that bridge and it was much narrower and a whole lot more wood then steel to hold it up and there were wooden planks running across its surface and they were some missing… NOW I knew why they were pulled over there. Look back in the mirror and they were running after me… Looked down at the speed and it was thirty mph… now if I stop I may stop on the bridge. So did one of those Smokey and the bandit thoughts and grab another gear and floored it….
The first word that came out was O sheeeee…. Now the good thing about this bridge was that it was short the front axle went across just find the drive axles came on to the bridge it felt soft the first half of the truck made it over… now the trailer was next now this happen in just seconds but everything was in slow motion. I could feel the trailer go down all the way across… it was a good thing that the bank on the other side was soft because I made a new ramp on that side coming up.
Looking back at the bridge in the mirror and it was still there as I could see from the dust. Went around the corner and could see back at the guys standing at the bridge and waving the hands at me. Man I couldn’t believe it I made it!! First thought was Halliburton didn’t have any balls. No that wasn’t true they were smart.
Now made it to the location and was proud of myself and was feeling pretty sure of it too. It was about an hour that went bye and my truck pusher drove up. Boy I was ready to tell him what a good driver I was and what I did until I saw his look… not good it’s funny now but not then.
He just got out of the truck and looked at me with a look of you dumb…&^%$# I said what? Like what did I do? He said that bridge that you went over didn’t you know that it won’t hold your truck? Didn’t you see Halliburton had stopped? I said yes but I thought they were taking a break. He said I can’t believe you made it across..!! The guys said that the bridge went down about a foot when you started across and stayed down.
He said he didn’t know whether to congratulate me or kick my butt…??? He said don’t go back that way… we may have rebuilt that bridge for that framer now you dumb a… When the boys shown up they just looked at me and shook their heads at me. Well that was the end of my Smokey and the bandit days…
Used a 1990 mercury sable i drove back in forth from home and camp.Bought it for $500,it got 23 MPH.The winter of 2009 in nd,we had record snow and cold-56below on night and thats not the wind chill. One night we got snow and wind, everybody drove a 4x4-driller,derrick and motor hand except me.Since it was the last day of the 7day hitch, everybody drove tothe rig. They left ahead of me,it was still dark 5 in the morning. Its a 15 mile drive to the rig,on the way out of the camp the derrick hand had got stuck and the motor hand was pulling him out.i stopped and got some coffee, drove about 3 miles and there along the road the motor hand was stuck and the derrick had was pulling him out.Went another 7 miles and there was the driller stuck along the roadI kept going and met the payloader from the rig going to pull him out.Anyway the hands at the rig never thought i would be the first to relieve them! But they were from montana and did not now how to drive in blizzard conditions-HA!The mercury sable did have new tires and front wheel drive. When we got done with our shift,i asked everybody if they wanted me to leave first and blaze a trail for them!!!When i got back to my home town, stopped at the local waterhole and everybody asked me how i made it,because the local tv station said the highway was closed.i replied"Not any more"
We rigged up a hose on a propane tank to air up the tires on a 1974 chevy impala back in 1981.
More bang for your buck...!
79 t-bird man you could put alot of greasers in the trunk of that car
Then you would have to drive around town looking for a laundrymat that would let you wash them because the misses wouldnt let you ruin her wash machine at the house.Do you remember i remember. Heee-haah!!
yeah and if you lived in a real oilfield town they had a row of dedicated "greasers only" machines i now have double set of machines laundry mats are expensive
Yea Ray true that ,since we use to drill everywhere we would "Hit (wash) and run" a dead
giveaway was smoking greasers in the dryer. Ha funny. Smart w/the double set.
Hey did you guys ever figured out how grease jumps off of stuff on to your clothes even when you are feet away from that stuff?
Hey Galen how are you sir? Without giving out to much information and being to graphic my first son,s middle name is "pipe dope"!!
