NORRIS CITY, Ill. — Four Southern Illinois oilfield workers were injured, three of them seriously, in an explosion at a lease in southern White County, Ill. Tuesday afternoon.
The injured have been identified as Shane Farris of Enfield, Ill., John Sullivan of Herald, Ill., Brandon Hooper of Fairfield, Ill., and Jason Parr of Norris City, Ill.
“They were filling a 210 barrel tank in preparation for a “frac job” when the tank sprang a leak,” said Sonny McCulley, father-in-law of Hooper, 28. “They apparently didn’t vent the tank before Shane started welding on it, and it exploded.”
Hooper was within 10 feet of the explosion with his back to the blast.
“A couple of them took off running around the well. The welder was completely engulfed in flames. Brandon and the others were able to put out the flames. Brandon put them all in his truck and drove them to Norris City where the ambulances and helicopters met them,” McCulley said.
The fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes. By the time the Norris City Fire Department arrived on scene, the blaze was out and all of the injured had been evacuated.
Farris and Parr were taken to the burn unit of a Louisville, Ky., hospital. Sullivan was taken to Barnes Hospital at St. Louis. Hooper was treated and released from Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, Ill.
“Brandon has burns to his hands and elbows,” McCulley said. “His back is really, really red, and his hands and stomach are really blistered. He is a very, very lucky man.”
The lease was operated by Bob Hartman for the Bankston Creek and Land Trust. Officials with the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Oil and Gas Division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources are investigating the explosion.
