Saline Derrickhand killed In fall from Louisiana Drilling Rig Derrick

May 11, 2012

22-year-old man from Saline, LA has died from injuries suffered in a fall from a Caddo Parish oil derrick Thursday night.

Ty Stewart was airlifted to LSU Health following the fall, where he died Friday morning.

Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputies say it happened around 9:30 p.m. on Keithville-Keatchie and Vardaman roads in South Caddo Parish.

Deputies say the man fell 90 feet. It is unknown why Stewart was on top of the oil derrick or what caused him to fall.

According to Stewart's Facebook page, he had been a derrickhand with Houston-based Savanna Energy since August 2011.

Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro, LA confirms they are handling arrangements for Stewart.

A nother Family and an Mother will have a sad mothers day weekend due to not engauging a BRAIN before the body. Theres no reason for hurry hurry or to forget to use the Fall protection.

You are right about one thing Dennis we did have a very sad Mother's Day but it wasn't because he didn't "engage his brain before his body". He had his safety harness on and had taken all the right safety precautions he was supposed to. FYI-He didn't "forget to use fall protection" his harness was still attached to him and broke. You should maybe use your brain when you decide to post your opinion on matters that you know nothing about and realize that his family would be looking at this. He was my baby brother and I don't appreciate you discrediting his work performance when you weren't there to witness it and he isn't here to defend himself. We have been told by alot of "big men in charge" that he did NOTHING wrong, and with that being said, I hope you are not faced with the same accident if you work in the same type position.

I'm sorry you and your family are having to go through this very rough time, just know our hearts and prayers are with you and your family. We work in a very dangerous place and its just so sad to hear when something like this happens, especially when all the safety precautions were taken.

Condolences to the Family, Especially the Mother, As a Parent of two grown children, I can think of no worse pain than to bury your baby. I hope to never know what that is like. As a 4th generation roughneck, i have buried 18 friends in 23 years, and every day pray to GOD that I don't have to bury anymore. Your family will be in my heart, and in my prayers

Our condolences to the family! We have lost so many good people in this industry, and all of our hearts go out to this family!

We are so sorry, I wish I could say something inspiring but there are no words, nothing can relieve this pain. All's we can do is hold on to Jesus. I know my son greeted their boy. These men are a breed of their own.I know Ross was there in Line to greet Ty home. That has been our only comfort since last January. We have started a non-profit organization in honor of fallen oil field workers. If there is anything we can do to assist from financial to legal assistance, or if your just needing to vent...please call or email us 24/7.

Our son was the 3rd generation to work in the oil field... Our family is still in shock. But we will push on, keep the course.
