"Adrian, the reason might be torsional vibration, called stick-slip. It occurs in deep wells, horizontal ones, when a well is drilled through hard formations with PDC. The bit stops for some time, topdrive accumulates high torque at the same time and…"

High Breakout Torque when Laying Down 4” XT-39 Drill Pipe.

I have noted most, if not all, rigs I go to in the Williston area report difficulty breaking out connections when laying down XT-39. This group may be a good way to gather information on this issue and try to find a solution. I think most of the wells being drilled in this area are about the same, 10k ft Vertical and 8-10k ft horizontal. It would be interesting to get information from rigs not having any issues as well as the ones who are. Does your rig have problems with high Breakout Torque…See More

Adrian, with top drive rigs, I have noticed that the age old practice of rotating breaks on trips has gone out the window on most of the rigs I'm around in the TX Panhandle.  This is not good practice.  I once had to literaly hold a hands brains in his head until paramedics arrived when a tong latch broke due to over torqued drillpipe.  Another thing is that if the proper make-up torque is not applied @ surface, then the pipe will nearly always over-torque downhole.  By using proper make-up torque surface, properly cleaning and doping the connections and rotating breaks on trips, these problems should be alleviated.
