Hey Guys,
There is a video & close-ups of the National 370 Drawworks on here now that I was yappin' about earlier.
This is the 1st rig I built where I attempted to put scale into my work. It is the one that was a complete layout from front to back and side to side. It took 5 years (off & on) to complete.
The drawworks itself was a 4 month project. It made its Maiden Appearance in the 1990 Energy Show in Estevan Sask, Canada & a few other appearances over the…

I am a Toolpusher for CanElson Drilling (Formerly Totem Drilling) in S.E. Sask for the past 6 years, prior to that I worked for Big Sky Drilling for 19 1/2 years, pushing Rig 4 for almost 10 of those years. I build working, 1/16 scale drilling rigs as a hobby.
I spend 100's of hours of my spare time replicating prototype drilling rigs and currently building a "Hodgson Design" 2800 m. tele double that will be 'almost' completely functional.
I have built 2 models in the past that…

Tom Kipgen said… OK Jim....this weight indicator is about done. The square vertical structure will be machined and mounted to the dial housing tomorrow I hope. The only thing that kind of worries me now is the amount of weight that will be put on that spring that you can see in the photo. How much do you think your deadline has on it with just the blocks, hook, bailes and elevators? All the weight will not apply to the spring directly....it will be buffered somewhat by other mechinisms and frictions.
I hope you don't think I'm doing this for money or anything. I've just always wanted to try and build one but knew it would be impossible for the scale I used. 1/16" is a different story!
Tom Kipgen said… Hey Jim I am moving right along with this weight indicator....at least the innards and part of the case. But I need some help with measurements on that model if you can. How deep is the round casement? It appears that the vertical structure is round correct? Is it connected flat against the back of the round case? It has been too many years since I even saw one of these. Your help would certainly be appreciated.
