"plenty of answers to this one. Open hole with motor, kick off plugs, the list goes on. Depends on what your trying to achieve and what your current well profile is as to what is the most suitable."

Kim Bufton replied to Lito Panis's discussion Calculating Surface Pressure
"Not enough info, you need pressure drop (loss) of surface lines (standpipe kellyhose), drill pipe, HWDP and Collars as well as any other dynamic influences as in MWD, motor, Underreamer jetting etc etc. Less important, but required for calculations…"

Kim Bufton replied to Ryan Roudebush's discussion Question from an Engine Manufacturer in the group Directional Drillers
"Perhaps I should have paid a bit more attention to the header, as in “question from an engine manufacturer” My comments were all about well control, as that was what I picked up on, when I see now it is not well control specific, but…"

Kim Bufton replied to Ryan Roudebush's discussion Question from an Engine Manufacturer in the group Directional Drillers
"You don’t have much experience do you? 1. You can’t define a "worst case", it is circumstances specific, worst case is you just blew you, your buddies and your rig to hell and back. Given that you can’t define anything…"

Kim Bufton replied to Overshot's discussion Scribing an adjustable motor in the group Directional Drillers
"Cracks me up getting new hands and they have lasers, tape etc, a laser only has to be a tad off vertical and you scribe could be 30deg out at the motor scribe, especially if you have a bunch of non mag in between (a simple small flashlight would be…"

Kim Bufton replied to Drilling Ahead's discussion How Do You Pump Your Sweeps & Pills? in the group Old School

Kim Bufton replied to Nick Broussard's discussion Opportunity to go Co-man in the group Directional Drillers
"While becoming a Co Man is a good career choice for a lot of people, it is not necessarily the best for a lot of others. Those that do, and are suited to it, are usually the guys who are sticklers for detail; you will get a lot that will require…"

Kim Bufton replied to Mohamed Boumezrag's discussion Bit selction
"You don't give enough info here to formulate and effective bit strategy, however it would appear that you should be using a tri-cone (could be inset or mill tooth, need more info to decide) on a motor. The motor will lessen vibration by…"

Kim Bufton replied to Barry Blaha's discussion Why do drilling bits have a pin and not a box
"This is because you use inpeg’s or PDC only for hi-speed motor / turbine work. It would be pointless using a tri-cone as you rapidly use up the bearing life, and tripping every few hours (which is time / money and latterly a safety issue). Not…"

Kim Bufton replied to Karl Eiriksson's discussion A New/ Old Scam in the group Old School
"This goes on a lot Karl. Not sure how they get the email addresses but they do. I got one a week ago telling me that there are several companies looking for Co Men and they were interested in me. Got a long spiel on how they will ensure I got a good…"

It's in de blood mon....

Long term international drilling hand, started in 77 in the North Sea. As an aussie bummin around the world I ran out of money in London and some guy in a pub said “go to Aberdeen and get a job on a rig”. Well I did, thinking this will do for a while till I build some cash up and bugger off for some more surfin and 32 years later I’m still building the pile while waiting on the perfect wave. Worked from Rousty to TP offshore, then managed two land rigs in Indo. Did a little Co man work, but that is not for me, too much paperwork, safety case and logistics when I would rather be drilling.

Was offered a job as DD in a bar one drunken night and took that on, and except where I have been loaned out through Baker as Co Man have stuck to DD since. Best of all jobs, once the Co Man knows you know what the hell your doing he just leaves you at it while he deals with the paperwork, safely case and logistics ha ha. Now a Senior Drilling Systems Supervisor in Angola and looking at the slide into retirement with dread, still feel like I am 21...... Guess I will have to retire someday and get a real job like my Ma keeps telling me to do.
