Cyber Drilling

Hey all,
I'm a Toolpusher on a dual derrick drillship that is capable of off-line stand building activities. The ship is not full dual activity, which is what I would ultimately would like to work on.

I helped doing the commissioning of the equipment on here when it was in South Korea shipyard. She's a good rig, and there is plenty of room on the decks and on the drill floor. The derrick is rated to 2 million pounds, and we have a 1 million pound crown mounted compensator. Running BOPS is a breeze compared to conventional rigs. When we ran the BOP last time in 2100 meters of water, the string weight was around 1.6 million.

It truly is amazing that you can have that much weight just literally at your finger tips. It's all joystick controls. If you were to have that kind of weight on a conventional rig, the old pooper valve would be working overtime, and you would have the AD helping to lean on the brake handle!
Although joystick control is good, you sort of loose the feel of the weight and magnitude of what could go wrong. The drillers' cabin is sound proofed, the drawworks drum is disc brake, so there is literally no noise.

I would recommend for anyone that has a chance to work on one of these rigs. These are the rigs of the future, and in time, the brake handle will be a thing of the past.

Comment by Joe lilley on October 29, 2009 at 9:05am: I have been on land rigs for 15 yrs. I have sent resumes out to offshore companies even to start out working floors to experience it,but I get no replies. I don't think they like to convert land hands to offshore hands...

I KNOW WHAT MEAN I JUST GOT A SENIOR TOOL PUSHING IN KUWAIT ON A BRAND NEW 3000 SERIES RIG WITH THE CHAIR WE RAN A 18 3/4 CASING STRING THAT WEIGHED 1.2 MILLION NO SWEAT . BUT LIKE YOU SAID IT HAS FEEL FOR WHAT IS HAPPENING OUTSIDE . BUT IT IS NEAT .

Comment by Thomas North on November 3, 2009 at 8:38pm: Never worked a cyber chair. Always conventional. Have worked many types of topdrives. Worked land, had to start as roustabout when going offshore. Alot of the times ,the HR believes that land hands are more used to the get in the truck and head to town. Offshore is more you are there might as well stay a while. I know that it isn't what you know,but who you know. I would like to work on a new build drillship or semi, but they know that I have the knowledge and capability to work the older equipment with surface stacks. Therefore I have been working in West Africa for a few years now. Before that it was Mexico. My son wants to follow my footsteps ,you can bet I will do everything I can to get him into ultra deep water. We are going to try to see if we can get him something in PA., on land to get his feet muddy. Myself, none of the land rig companies want to talk to me,because of my working offshore for the past 17 yrs.

I have been on cyber rigs since 2001 on the rig H&P 405 in West Africa I am now on Sea Drill's drill ship the West Polaris which is a true dual activity.
