Drilling Ahead

World Oilfield Forum

2nd presidential debate, Obama lied-truth died

The Obama administration has in fact halted drilling permits on federal lands.

Unbeknownst to most folks outside the industry, President Obama's response had entirely NOTHING to to do with Gov. Romney's line of questioning about the Obama administration's intentional log-jamming of drilling PERMITS on federal lands.
President Obama responded with "use it or lose it" in reference to LEASES on federal lands.

As most Drilling Ahead members know:
A "Lease" is an agreement between an oil company and a landowner which establishes an upfront fee for the said lease and a division of interest should said lease become productive (typically a company pays for 100% of everything in exchange for 75% of net revenue, or some variation thereof) .

A "Lease" simply establishes agreement between oil company and landowner , it does NOT give the company a right to drill, a drilling PERMIT is still required. Drilling "Permits" are typically issued by the oil & gas regulatory agency of a particular state, BUT in the case of federal lands a FEDERALLY issued drilling PERMIT must accompany and/or supersede the typical state permit.

Governor Romney was completely correct in stating that the Obama administration has exponentially decreased the number of "Drilling Permits" issued for federal leases , thereby significantly decreasing drilling activity on federal lands.

I am not certain if President Obama really comprehends the difference between "leases" and "permits", but I assume that he does and his redirection to "leasing activity" in his response was a purposeful ploy to mislead the citizenry.

So best case scenario, our current U.S. president is too stupid to understand the difference between a LEASE and a PERMIT ,

or worse yet, he intentionally misled debate viewers with outright lies & intentional material misrepresentations.

Until next time, keep some powder dry and don't forget to vote !

I have taken a look at the statistics from the BLM and the picture is a little mixed.  can you expand upon your comment relative to the information found at:

http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/wo/MINERALS__REALTY__AND...

For example, it looks like "Number of Producible and Service Completions on Federal Lands" has gone up during a period where the drilling permits have gone down?  Also I note that the number of drilling permits increased dramatically in 2004 and continued at about the same level through 2008 when they dropped to what appears to be the historic norm for this statistic.  Why the sudden rise in 2004?

For purposes of this discussion we would be looking at :

"Number of Drilling Permits approved by fiscal year"

This number of permits issued has gone from a high of 7,124 in 2007 under Bush to an average of just over 4,000 for each year under the Obama regime thus far .

The number of new wells spudded during 2007 was 5,343 compared to an average of 3,200 each year under Obama beginning in 2009 when the Obama administration took over.

Furthermore, Obama's comments about "use it or lose it" , with regard to federal Leases, while serving as a distraction from the actual subject at hand, were interesting because he was admitting that his administration actively sought to take away existing leases from from oil & gas operators, not quite what I would call a policy conducive to increasing drilling activity on federal lands.

Honestly, I think we're screwed either way. Just as most politicians, both the President and Congressman Romney have their own agenda on what they plan on doing. All the debates and what not is the same old crap that comes out everytime there is a debate or other public speaking event. It would be quite liberating to have someone run for President that actually cares about the US Economy and the citizens they govern.

As far as Drilling Permits and actual drilling, this country would be better off to have a panel of US Citizens that understand the process to approve or deny everything. This country is in a crap hole because of these idiots that we have elected and things really need to turn around but it's sad to say that it is very doubtfully going to happen with either Romney or Nobama.

I agree with you Jesse, I certainly don't believe Romney is going to be the answer . What I do believe is that a Romney win can give everybody enough breathing room to still have a chance of possibly straightening this country out and I fully realize that is likely being overly optimistic on my part. As cliche' as it sounds, I am convinced that the U.S. cannot withstand four more years of Obama and it would truly be the beginning of the end. I am best described as Libertarian and my belief is the best answer for our bloated government would be to abolish about 90% of it immediately. To hell with Big Bird, I say get rid of every federal agency with a three letter acronym for a name, abolishing the EPA, TSA, DOE, and FDA would be a great start.

We are suppose to have a government of the people, NOT be a "people governed" !

I am a member of the Libertarian Party as well so we do believe but I think we should keep TSA since they are charged with keeping weapons and other dangerous matter off the planes we fly on. Even though they are not perfect, they do a pretty good job. We do need to lighten the load of the government officials and just get them out of office because alot of them basterds are corrupt. Maybe i'll run for president in 2020 LOL. You have to be 35 years old and pay a 6 thousand dollar registeration fee and i'm only 29 so out of the running there. It p***** me off that there are so many people in this country without a job (me included) and you have Obama buying a 35 million dollar mansion in Hawaii to go live in. But the biggest thing to top it off is all the vacations the obama tooks on our dime to various locations instead of using part of Nobama 400,000 dollar a year salary.

Just read some of the items on this website, you would be red with anger.

Waiting period for a federal permit in Wyoming has gone from what was typically 45 days to a minimum of 180 days or longer.
