Sedco700. Offshore Nigeria

Seismic studies (Shallow hazard assesment) was done. with no risk of shallow gas detected in the area. (wells previously drilled with no shallow gas observed)

Plan: Drill 26" section riserless (normal) and set 20" casing.

Encountered shallow gas (unexpected) 300m below mudline.
Pumped kill mud instantly, followed by seawater at max flow rate, bubbling stopped after 40mins. (dynamic kill + bridging of formation??)

BHA stuck in hole, cut pipe, P and A hole.

I was on that rig as a Driller, in the North Sea, about 9 months, 1981, then moved over to the Sedneth 701, the good old days!
